Departing from Udine (45km from Grado) historic and cultural center of the Friuliano people, with its elegant pedestrian zone which extends below the castle, and its refined shops; the ancient Iulia Augusta street continues North crosses first the ancient city of Tricesimo with its churches and its numerous shrines located along the streets and on the facades of the houses, then one can visit the imposing Colle-Fortezza di Osoppo, the theatre of some glorious episodes such as the siege of Savorgnan by the Venetians in 1514, or the heroic defense by the Italian patriots of 1848, at any rate a complex of great historic and naturalistic interest. One ought to finish with two historical gems, Gemona – rich in history and culture, and the fortified medieval city of Venzone which has been perfectly restored and conserved; in the monumental complex maintained by the Italian state, one must visit the cathedral and the Palazzo Comunale, as well as the high walls, noble palaces and perfectly rebuilt farmers’ houses. In the area is also another local curiosity, Bordano, the butterfly country. From here, the route continues on to the mountainous area of our region, with trails and nature of particular interest.
