Grado  passed under Austrian control after the fall of Venice (1797) and the Napoleonic period with the establishment of the Lombard-Venetian kingdom in 1815 (Congress of Vienna). In the year 1873, thanks to a paediatrician from Florence, Doctor Giuseppe Barellai, Grado was found to be a "Cure Resort" approved by Imperial and Royal law of Franz Joseph, soon becoming the seaside resort for the Austro-Hungarian noble families. This high society who dressed with extensive embroidery and lace, who bathed in the sea dressed, whose women would cover up quickly to not reveal their bodies and to whom we owe the discovery of fresh drinkable water at a depth 217 meters disappeared with the Great War.
