I n 1918 the Italians arrived, especially those who needed particular treatments: sand bathing, for instance, a technique that the fishermen anciently used to cure their aching parts by heating up some sand and applying it using small bags.After the second world war many exiles from Istria arrived in Grado; some 1,300 people in the first exodus. The population immediately increased and further wet land was to be reclaimed to obtain building land: the Isola della Schiusa or the Colmata just behind the free entrance beach.
