Gradisca was fortified at the end of the 15th century by the Venetien Empire to defend against the Turkish invasions; the city became a solid fortress whose reinforcements were also aided by Leonardo Da Vinci – much of the city’s imposing defensive works are even preserved today (gates, bastions, moats) some of which is carved out of the natural rock and culminates in the powerful structure of the castle, which was constructed later by the Hapsburgs. Even though the city plan has a militaristic character, the buildings and churches, which are found along the principle arteries of the historic centre are notable examples of typical Venetian elegance. One ought not to forget the "Casa dei Provveditori Veneti" in which is located one of the most notable regional quality wine-sellers "La Serenissima", where one could taste the best wines of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
